Everybody's Fine

Spoiler Alert
I haven't seen a movie that has actually made me cry in a very long time. The movie Everybody's Fine came out on DVD recently and I bawled. It's a very touching story about a dad of four, his kids are all grown up and each one wants to make their dad proud. They do not want him to worry about them so they choose to lie to him about their lives. They all became what, in their youth, he encouraged them to be or at least close to that occupation. He expects them to arrive for a special weekend visit, goes shopping for them, and they all cancel so he decides to travel all over the country and surprise each one.

However after showing up they would quickly send him away, tell him they had important things to do and they just didn't have the time to visit. The underlying reason was because they were all trying to help their brother, David.

I don't want to ruin it to much so I won't give away the ending, but it turns out to be a very sad movie, with a somewhat happy ending.
I hope that my children will stay close to me when they grow older. I also hope that they will always feel they can be honest with me, and know that I will be proud of them no matter what. It's weird that after watching a movie such as Everybody's Fine I realize that there are little things that I don't do now, such as take the time to sit down and read with my children every night instead of every once in awhile. Movies like that make me want to be a better parent. I wonder if that is the moral of the story the author was hoping for.

If you haven't seen the movie yet, I strongly suggest watching it. I do have to say that it takes awhile to actually get into the movie, but it's worth getting into.

pleasant viewing :)
